
Overview
The 8-Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Course is designed to meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for performing renovation, repair, and painting (RRP) work in homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978. This certification ensures workers understand how to safely manage lead-based paint hazards, protect themselves and occupants, and comply with federal regulations.
Failure to obtain certification can result in fines of up to $37,500 per day.
Course Overview
The EPA RRP Lead Renovator Course instructs participants on:
- Health effects of lead-based paint
- Lead testing procedures
- Lead-safe work practices
- Educating clients on lead hazards
Contractors disturbing more than 6 square feet in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities must employ at least one certified renovator. Owners or principals must complete this course to allow their employees to work under their lead certification. Firms must also submit an EPA Firm Application to become Lead Safe Certified.
Course Delivery:
- Majority online (6 hours) with mandatory in-person hands-on training
- Partial online options under development using Learning Management System

- Cleaning Verification Procedure
- Clearance testing and waste disposal methods
Module 7 – Recordkeeping
- Renovation record retention for 3 years
- Required documentation for firm and renovator certifications
- Post-renovation reporting requirements
Module 8 – Training Non-Certified Workers
- Responsibilities of Certified Renovators for training
- Roles of Trained Non-Certified Renovation Workers
- Steps for lead-safe work practices
- Documentation of worker training
