Overview

The 7 Hour Periodic Gas Piping Inspector Qualification course is required by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) for professionals performing periodic inspections of gas piping systems under the direct supervision of a Licensed Master Plumber. Participants must complete this training and submit a Certificate of Completion to the DOB Licensing Unit to meet regulatory requirements.

This program equips inspectors with the knowledge, practical skills, and compliance understanding necessary to perform safe and accurate inspections of gas piping systems in NYC.

Topics

The course covers essential topics for safe and compliant gas piping inspections:

  • Overview of NYC DOB systems, including Building Information Systems, DOB Now, standard operating procedures, Policy & Procedure Notices, notifications, forms, and inspection checklists

  • Regulations on piping safety and compliance

  • Properties and characteristics of natural gas

  • Use of combustible gas detectors and leak detection techniques

  • Conducting atmospheric corrosion leak surveys

  • Performing interior piping leak surveys

  • Hands-on instruction with gas detection equipment

  • Understanding jurisdictional and non-jurisdictional piping connections

  • Proper procedures for purging gas piping into or out of service

  • Identifying illegal connections and substandard conditions

  • Reporting and documenting inspection findings accurately

Pre-Requisites

There are no pre-requisites for enrollment in the 7 Hour Periodic Gas Piping Inspector Qualification course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify illegal connections and substandard piping conditions

  • Recognize and understand the properties of natural gas

  • Properly report and document inspection results in compliance with DOB regulations

Course Materials

All required materials, including manuals and in-class instruction aids, will be provided to participants during the course.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Participants who meet course attendance and participation requirements are eligible for 0.7 CEUs.

Course Duration

The 7 Hour Periodic Gas Piping Inspector Qualification consists of 7 instructional hours, not including scheduled breaks.

This training ensures inspectors are fully prepared to conduct periodic gas piping inspections safely, accurately, and in full compliance with NYC DOB requirements.
