The 8 Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Initial (Blended) course is designed to meet federal requirements for individuals performing renovation, repair, or painting activities in homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978. This 8 Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Initial (Blended) program follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule and includes both online and in-person training components.
This blended learning format allows participants to complete 6 hours online while fulfilling the EPA-required 2 hours of hands-on training in person. Successful completion results in EPA -recognized Lead Renovator certification issued by an EPA-authorized training provider. The 8 Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Initial (Blended) course ensures participants are fully prepared for compliance in regulated environments.
Course Overview
On April 22, 2010, the EPA enacted the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requiring contractors working in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities to obtain EPA Lead Paint Certification. Individuals who fail to comply with this rule may face civil penalties of up to $37,500 per day.
The 8 Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Initial (Blended) course educates participants on:
- Health effects of lead-based paint exposure
- Methods for identifying and testing lead-based paint
- Lead-safe work practices when lead is present
- Proper communication with clients regarding lead hazards
Any contractor disturbing more than 6 square feet of painted surfaces in regulated buildings must employ at least one Lead Safe Certified Contractor who has completed the required EPA certification training.
Blended Training Format
This 8 Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Initial (Blended) training includes:
- Online instruction covering regulatory and technical knowledge
- In-person, hands-on skills practice required by the EPA

Online portions may be completed in advance, but attendance at the in-person session is mandatory to receive certification.
Certification Validity and Refresher Option
EPA Lead Safe Renovator certification is valid for five (5) years. Participants who already hold an active certification are eligible to complete a 4-hour refresher course, which may be taken entirely online, provided their certification has not expired. Completing the 8 Hour EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified Renovator Initial (Blended) course earns a certification recognized nationwide.
